A few weeks ago, someone asked me why hardly anyone replies to their InMails.

20 messages – 0 responses.

Does that sound familiar? You put in the effort, write in a friendly way, but it feels like you're talking into the void.

If you first want to work out when an InMail is the right tool: [What an InMail is and what it costs](https://compleadly.com/blog/what-is-linkedin-inmail).

## ➡️ The real question is:

How do you get people to reply to your InMail without overwhelming them with a pitch?

Here’s the psychological trick that really works 👇

## 1️⃣ Start with a question – not an offer.

For example: “Am I right in thinking that you work in IT security?”

It’s neutral, shows interest and is easy to answer.

Recruiters use the same question-based approach to reach candidates who aren’t actively looking: “Am I right that you’ve moved your backend to Kotlin?” If you’re looking for a job, ask the team lead about the team rather than the position. For example: “Is the advertised role more about building things or keeping them running?” Both questions can be answered in one sentence, which is why they get replies. InMails do cost credits, though. You can message Premium members with [LinkedIn Open Profile](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-open-profile) without using credits. With Sales Navigator, you get 50 InMails a month; you can find out what else the plan includes in [LinkedIn Sales Navigator: a worthwhile investment or an overrated sales tool?](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-sales-navigator-a-worthwhile-investment-or-an-overrated-sales-tool) A connection request is often enough. Once it’s accepted, you can use the same question as an opener. CompLeadly sends both to people in your target audience, including as an InMail if you prefer, and follows up when your message has gone unanswered for the number of days you set. In the free version, InMails, openers and follow-ups are core features with daily limits, such as 5 InMails and 1 follow-up per day. For an example of how recruiters combine InMails and connection requests, see [the recruiting use case](https://compleadly.com/use-cases/recruiters).

## 2️⃣ Use the need to be right.

People love to confirm or correct something.

When they reply – even with “No, that’s not right” – the chat is open.

## 3️⃣ Keep it short.

An InMail is not a novel. One sentence + one question is more than enough.

Before you use any credits, the [LinkedIn Message Check](https://compleadly.com/free-tools/message-check) checks whether your message is short enough, includes a question and avoids promotional language.

## 4️⃣ Build on the reply later.

When someone responds, you can write to them again even months later – the chat stays open like a regular LinkedIn message.

‍

💡 The first step towards more InMail replies is not selling better –

but asking better questions.

How do you currently start your first message on LinkedIn?
