**Lead generation for a marketing agency works best when you pick one niche, run two or three channels every week and measure replies and meetings per channel, not likes or impressions.** Referrals and content build trust over time, direct outreach on LinkedIn creates conversations with the companies you actually want, and a fixed weekly routine keeps the pipeline filled while client work gets busy. Below you'll find the channels compared, a step-by-step LinkedIn outreach process and the metrics to track.

**As of September 23, 2026.**

## Why agencies struggle with their own pipeline

Generating demand for clients is your day job. Your own pipeline still often suffers from three things:

- **Client work comes first.** When projects are busy, prospecting stops, and a few weeks later there's a gap.
- **Referrals can't be planned.** They bring good clients, but you can't decide when the next one comes.
- **The offer is too broad.** "Full-service marketing for companies of all sizes" is hard to remember and hard to recommend.

## Step 1: Choose a niche and a clear offer

Every channel gets easier once you know exactly who you're talking to. Write down your ideal client in four lines:

1. **Industry:** for example B2B software, manufacturing or professional services.
2. **Company size:** the size where your service has the biggest effect and budgets fit.
3. **Buyer:** the role that signs off, such as the head of marketing or the founder.
4. **Trigger:** an event that creates a need right now, such as a new marketing lead, a funding round, a product launch or open marketing roles.

Then turn your service into an offer with a concrete result and an easy first step, for example a fixed-price audit or a short workshop. A small entry offer is easier to say yes to than a retainer.

## The main lead generation channels compared

| Channel | Time to first conversations | Ongoing effort | Works best when |
| ------------------------------ | --------------------------- | ------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Referrals and existing clients | Fast | Low | You have happy clients and ask them actively |
| LinkedIn outreach | Fast | Medium | Your niche is clearly defined and active on LinkedIn |
| Content on LinkedIn | Medium | Medium | You post regularly on one topic |
| Website, SEO and case studies | Slow | High at first, then lower | You can show results in your niche |
| Partnerships | Medium | Low to medium | Other providers serve the same clients (web developers, consultants, software vendors) |
| Events and webinars | Medium | High | Your buyers attend the same events |
| Paid ads | Fast | Budget-dependent | You have a tested offer and a page that converts |
| Email | Fast | Medium | Your contact has agreed to it, for example after a LinkedIn chat |

You don't need all of them. A common combination for small agencies is referrals plus LinkedIn outreach plus one content channel. For a broader overview of channels, see [customer acquisition channels](https://compleadly.com/blog/customer-acquisition-channels-how-to-use-the-best-channels-to-win-new-customers).

## Inbound: make it easy to find and trust you

- **Case studies from your niche:** problem, what you did, what changed. Only use numbers your client has approved.
- **A lead magnet:** a checklist, template or short audit that solves one small problem for your ideal client. More in [why a lead magnet comes before any sale](https://compleadly.com/blog/why-a-lead-magnet-is-the-most-important-step-before-any-sale).
- **Content on LinkedIn:** posts from the founder or team about the problems your clients have, not about your agency. Why this works is covered in [why LinkedIn content is your best salesperson](https://compleadly.com/blog/why-linkedin-content-is-your-best-salesperson-even-without-advertising).
- **Comments with substance:** thoughtful comments on posts by your target buyers get you noticed before you reach out. See the [commenting trick for consultants, coaches and agencies](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-commenting-trick-for-consultants-coaches-and-agencies).

## Outbound on LinkedIn: a step-by-step process

1. **Build the list.** Use LinkedIn search or Sales Navigator filters for industry, company size, role and location. Keep one list per segment.
2. **Warm up.** Visit the profile, follow the company or comment on a recent post.
3. **Connect.** With or without a note; both can work. We compare them in [LinkedIn connections with or without a message](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-connections-with-or-without-a-message-what-works-better).
4. **First message after acceptance.** Refer to the trigger, name one relevant observation and ask one easy question.
5. **Follow up once or twice.** Add something new each time, such as a short idea or a relevant example. Then stop.
6. **Move to a call.** Offer your entry offer, not the full retainer.

An example first message (all details fictional):

> Hi \[First name\], congratulations on the new role at \[company\]. Many marketing leads in \[industry\] spend their first months rebuilding the lead pipeline, so I wondered: is LinkedIn part of that plan, or is the focus elsewhere for now?

If you automate any of this, keep volumes moderate and every message relevant.

## The metrics to track

Track the same few numbers for every channel, ideally weekly:

| Stage | What you count |
| -------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| Reach | Contacts approached, connection requests accepted |
| Replies | All replies and positive replies |
| Meetings | First calls booked and held |
| Pipeline | Proposals sent |
| Revenue | Clients won and their value |

Compare segments and message versions against each other and change one thing at a time. A channel that brings many replies but few meetings usually needs a sharper offer, not more volume.

## A weekly routine for small agencies

- **Monday:** build or refresh one target list and check triggers.
- **Tuesday to Thursday:** daily outreach block, replies and comments.
- **Two posts a week:** one insight from client work, one practical tip.
- **Friday:** review the numbers above and ask one happy client for a referral or a short testimonial.

## LinkedIn outreach for your agency and your clients with CompLeadly

CompLeadly is a desktop app that automates LinkedIn outreach locally on your computer, with an optional CompLeadly cloud computer. Agencies use it for their own pipeline and for client campaigns:

- **Target audiences from your searches:** from the regular LinkedIn people search or Sales Navigator.
- **Sequences:** profile visit, connection request, a first message after acceptance and follow-ups that only go out once a message has gone unanswered for a number of days you set.
- **Congratulations on ten occasions (Premium and up):** for example birthdays, new positions, promotions or work anniversaries, so you stay present with a contact list without writing every message yourself.
- **Statistics per workflow (Premium and up):** compare texts and audiences side by side, useful for your own tests and for client reporting.
- **Team features (Premium and up):** a shared team blocklist helps you avoid contacting the same person twice, and shared statistics use the roles Creator, Editor and Viewer.
- **One LinkedIn profile per setup:** the app itself advises against running several LinkedIn profiles on one computer. Each client sender runs on their own computer or, as a paid add-on, on a CompLeadly cloud computer.
- **Connections to your stack:** send results to your CRM via the webhook engine (Premium and up), for example through Zoho Flow, n8n or Make. The MCP server lets AI assistants read and manage your workflows; it is included in every plan, including the free version.
- **Your own brand:** if you want to offer LinkedIn automation to clients under your name, see [white label for agencies](https://compleadly.com/white-label).
- **Transparency (Premium and up):** for every skipped profile you see why, with more than 260 documented reasons.

The free version covers the basic functions with a daily limit; the features above (congratulations, workflow statistics, team blocklist, webhooks, skipped-profile detail) need Premium or higher, while the MCP server is available in the free version too. After the 10-day trial with every feature, the free version gives you for example 2 connection requests and 1 follow-up per day, each step started on its own; whole workflows and schedules come with Basic. Details on plans are on the [pricing page](https://compleadly.com/pricing), agency examples on [CompLeadly for agencies](https://compleadly.com/use-cases/agencies). If you'd rather have outreach set up and run for you, look at [done-for-you](https://compleadly.com/services/done-for-you).

The same setup works for hiring. When your agency needs a designer or a performance marketer, build an audience of candidates from a people search, for example by job title and city, and run the same sequence of profile visit, connection request, first message and follow-up ([CompLeadly for recruiters](https://compleadly.com/use-cases/recruiters)). It also works from the other side: if you want to join an agency, filter the people search for agency founders and team leads and write to them directly; the free version covers the [basic functions with a daily limit](https://compleadly.com/pricing), started one step at a time. How to signal that you are open to offers is covered in [Open to Work on LinkedIn](https://compleadly.com/blog/open-to-work-linkedin).

## FAQ: lead generation for marketing agencies

### What is the best lead generation channel for a marketing agency?

There's no single best channel. Referrals and direct outreach usually bring the first conversations fastest, while content, SEO and case studies take longer but keep working. Start with the channel your ideal clients actually use and measure meetings per channel.

### How do marketing agencies find clients on LinkedIn?

By defining a narrow target group, building lists with LinkedIn search or Sales Navigator, engaging with posts before reaching out and sending short, specific messages that refer to a trigger such as a new role or a product launch.

### How many follow-ups should I send?

One or two, each with something new. If there's no reply after that, stop and try again later with a new reason.

### What role does email play in agency outreach?

It's the second step. Connect on LinkedIn first and move to email once your contact agrees. People who said yes expect your email and are more likely to reply.

### Should an agency automate its LinkedIn outreach?

Automation saves time on repetitive steps. If you automate, keep volumes moderate, personalize every message and keep the targeting narrow.
