How to create a LinkedIn group, in short: on your LinkedIn homepage, click Groups, then Create group, fill in the group details and click Create. Choose public or private with care, because LinkedIn doesn't let you change that setting later. For lead generation, the bigger draw is messaging: members can send message requests to members they aren't connected with, if the recipient's settings allow it. **Last updated: 2 October 2026.**

## What LinkedIn groups still do for lead generation in 2026

LinkedIn does not publish how many people a group post reaches. A group is a list of people who sorted themselves by topic, and membership opens a messaging route you otherwise only get through a connection or an InMail.

LinkedIn recommends groups for exactly this: “Use InMail and Groups to network with LinkedIn members you don't know.” You can message your 1st-degree connections for free, and one of the exceptions LinkedIn lists is members of the same group, to whom you can send a message request. Sources: [LinkedIn Help on invitations](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a551012) and [LinkedIn Help: Send messages on LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a554575), both retrieved 2 October 2026.

So a group is a filter and a reason to reach out. The same idea works on Facebook; our guide to [getting leads from Facebook groups](https://compleadly.com/blog/facebook-group-leads) shows how to carry those contacts over to LinkedIn.

## How to find the right LinkedIn groups and join them

According to LinkedIn Help, you type a keyword or group name into the search bar and pick the group results from the dropdown. The page is a few years old, so the interface may differ slightly. Joining means clicking “Request to join,” and “Membership approval is solely up to the group.” Source: [LinkedIn Help: Find and join a LinkedIn Group](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a544795), retrieved 2 October 2026.

Choosing matters more than searching. Before you request to join, check:

- **Who is in it?** Open the member list and look at twenty profiles. If your target customers, candidates or contacts don't show up there, the group won't help you.
- **Is anyone moderating?** Check the latest posts and whether anyone replies.

Keep the caps in mind: you can be a member of up to 100 groups and have up to 20 pending join requests at a time (see the table below). For a curated starting point, see [19 LinkedIn groups you should not miss](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/19-linkedin-groups-you-should-not-miss).

## How to create a LinkedIn group, step by step

Your own group makes sense when you want to own a topic and have time to moderate. LinkedIn's steps:

1. On your LinkedIn homepage, click **Groups** in the left pane.
2. Click **Create group** in the upper-right corner.
3. Fill in the group details: name, description, rules and the privacy setting.
4. Click **Create**.

Source: [LinkedIn Help: Create a LinkedIn Group](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a540601), retrieved 2 October 2026\. LinkedIn caps group creation at five groups per day.

### Before you start a LinkedIn group: public or private

You make this choice once. LinkedIn says: “Once created, group privacy settings cannot be changed.” In a public group, anyone can see posts, but only members can post or comment. In a private group, only members can see posts. Whether a group is listed in search or unlisted is an option for private groups only.

Our pick for a prospecting group: private and listed. People can find it, and members speak more openly when the whole internet isn't reading along. Go public if visibility of your content is the goal.

### What a new group needs in its first weeks

Set clear rules, ask questions yourself and invite people who have something to add. LinkedIn puts no number on owner invitations; per its help page, the limit depends on current group size, your tenure on LinkedIn, your number of connections and your pending invitations ([LinkedIn Help on group invitations](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a546768), retrieved 2 October 2026).

## LinkedIn group limits at a glance

LinkedIn's general limits page lists these values:

| Limit | Value |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Groups you can create in one day | 5 |
| Groups you can be a member of | 100 |
| Groups with a pending join request | 20 |
| Groups you can manage | 30 |
| Owners per group | 10 |
| Managers per group | 20 |
| New message requests admins can send per day to unconnected members of their group | 50 |
| Posts per group per week | 15 |
| Groups you can post in per week | 20 |
| Maximum members in one group | 3 million (an older help page says 2 million) |

On group size, LinkedIn contradicts itself. The limits page, updated about a year ago according to LinkedIn, says “Membership limit for one group 3 million.” An older page on adding and removing owners and managers, updated about five years ago, says owners can “maintain a group membership of up to 2 million.” We treat the newer figure as current.

Two more lines help with planning. First: “Currently, we can't increase the above-mentioned limits.” Second, if you post the same content across multiple groups, LinkedIn may automatically flag it as spam and not display it. Sources: [LinkedIn Help: General limits for LinkedIn groups](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a544801) and [LinkedIn Help: Add or Remove Group Owners and Group Managers](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a553440), both retrieved 2 October 2026.

## Group owners vs. managers: who can do what

A LinkedIn group can have up to 10 owners and 20 managers. Their rights differ here:

- **Only owners** can add more owners and managers, delete the group, edit group information and block a group owner.
- **Owners and managers** can both invite members, recommend, pin and approve posts, remove or block members and moderate the group.

Note: an owner can't give up owner permissions or leave the group until another owner has been added. LinkedIn won't add an owner without consent either, even if the current owners are inactive. So name a second owner from your team on day one. Sources: [LinkedIn Help: Difference between LinkedIn group owners and managers](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a553124) and [LinkedIn Help: Add or Remove Group Owners and Group Managers](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a553440), both retrieved 2 October 2026.

One rule ties straight into prospecting: owners and managers can't turn off the option for other members to message them ([LinkedIn Help on group messaging settings](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a541708)). If you run a group, every member can reach you, which is the point of running one.

## How to message LinkedIn group members without connecting

### What LinkedIn documents

- As a group member, you can send a message request to other members you are not connected with: “You can send a message request to communicate with coworkers or Group members that you aren't already connected with.” ([LinkedIn Help: Send, receive, and manage message requests](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a552485))
- It only works if the recipient's settings allow direct messages from other group members ([LinkedIn Help on messaging group members](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a548266)). Every member can switch this to Yes or No in their group settings.
- You can't attach files to message requests. LinkedIn also notes: “we may limit your ability to send messages to members you are not connected to.”
- There is no broadcast: “Currently, you can't send a direct message to all group members at once.” ([LinkedIn Help on group messages](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a541725))
- None of these pages says how many message requests a regular member can send. LinkedIn publishes only the admin allowance: 50 new message requests per day to unconnected members of their own group.

All pages retrieved 2 October 2026.

To connect instead, go through the group's member list: open the member's profile, click Connect, optionally add a personal message, then click Send Invitation ([LinkedIn Help on connecting with group members](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a541787), retrieved 2 October 2026). Normal invitation limits apply. Why LinkedIn gives no fixed weekly number is covered in our guide to the [LinkedIn connection limit](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-connection-limit). For the note itself, use our [LinkedIn connection message templates](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-connection-message-templates).

### A message that fits the group

The shared group is your reason to write, so use it specifically. A sales example:

> Hi \[First name\], we're both in \[group name\]. I read your post on \[topic\], and your point about \[detail\] matches what I'm seeing with clients right now. Mind if I ask you a quick question about it?

No link, pitch or calendar invite in the first message. People who reply get those later.

## Turning group members into a target audience in CompLeadly

One condition first: for the Group Members Messenger, CompLeadly only accepts a Sales Navigator people search with a group filter as the audience. That means you need your own Sales Navigator license.

1. In Sales Navigator, open the lead filters, set the group filter to exactly one group and add region, industry or job title. The details are in [how to select group members in Sales Navigator searches](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/how-to-select-group-members-in-sales-navigator-searches); the filters in general are covered in [how to use LinkedIn Sales Navigator](https://compleadly.com/blog/how-to-use-linkedin-sales-navigator).
2. Add the search to CompLeadly as a target audience.
3. Add the Group Members Messenger (Premium) to your sequence. It sends each member exactly one message within the time window you set and sticks to the daily limit you choose.

To check whether direct messages to group members work on your account right now, click Message on a member in LinkedIn: do you get a normal window or an InMail window? What to do in the second case is in [checking the Group Members Messenger status on LinkedIn](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/limitation-of-the-group-member-messenger-function-on-linkedin).

You can also export the audience. Profile export runs at 99 profiles per day on the free plan and with no cap of its own from Basic. Excel export starts at Basic, Google Sheets at Premium. The route is described in [exporting contacts from a LinkedIn group](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/exporting-contacts-from-a-linkedin-group). For a group you run, there is also an Invite to group feature (Premium).

Or work the audience the classic way: visit the profile, connect with a note, send an opener after acceptance, follow up until they reply. On the free plan that means 25 profile visits, 2 connection requests, 1 opener and 1 follow-up per day, each as a single step. From Basic, CompLeadly sets no cap of its own on these steps, and full sequences with schedules start at Basic. LinkedIn's own limits still apply.

You can test every feature free for 10 days, no credit card required. After that, your account switches to the free plan automatically. Plans and prices are on the [pricing page](https://compleadly.com/pricing), and every feature with its plan is on the [features page](https://compleadly.com/features).

## Common mistakes in LinkedIn groups

- **The same post in ten groups.** LinkedIn may flag identical posts across groups as spam and hide them. Write one post per group, shaped to its topic.
- **Joining and pitching on day one.** Read along for a few days and comment on two or three posts before you write anyone.
- **Size over fit.** The biggest group for your keyword is rarely the one with your buyers. Check the member list, not the member count.
- **Your own group with a single owner.** If that owner drops out, LinkedIn won't appoint a new one. Share ownership from the start.

## LinkedIn groups for sales, recruiting and job seekers

### Sales

Build a Sales Navigator search with a group filter plus job title and region, then work it in CompLeadly: directly without connecting via the Group Members Messenger (Premium), or through visit, connect, opener and follow-ups (free plan with daily limits, no cap of its own from Basic). Test two groups against each other and keep the one that produces replies.

### Recruiting

Professional groups are candidate pools. With the same Sales Navigator search and group filter, you message members through the Group Members Messenger (Premium) without spending InMail credits. Recruiter Lite users can also use their searches, pipeline and saved searches as an audience (own Recruiter license required). More on the [recruiters page](https://compleadly.com/use-cases/recruiters).

### Job seekers

Recruiters, hiring managers and people at your target employers read along in groups. Join the groups in your field, comment with substance and use the shared group as the reason for a message request. In CompLeadly, a LinkedIn people search for recruiters or hiring managers at your target companies becomes your audience, followed by a profile visit, a connection request with a note, an opener and a follow-up. That works on the free plan with daily limits, such as 2 connection requests and 25 profile visits per day. ## Frequently asked questions: LinkedIn groups for lead generation

How to create a LinkedIn group?

On your LinkedIn homepage, click Groups in the left pane, click Create group in the upper-right corner, fill in the group details and click Create. Decide on public or private first, because LinkedIn says privacy settings can't be changed after the group is created. You can create up to five groups per day.

Are LinkedIn groups still worth it for lead generation?

Yes, as a way to find the right people and reach them. Members can send other members a message request without connecting if the recipient's settings allow it. LinkedIn does not publish how much reach a group post gets, so judge a group by its members, not its size.

Can you message LinkedIn group members without connecting?

Yes, with a message request, as long as the recipient allows messages from other group members. You can't attach files, and there is no option to message all members at once. LinkedIn doesn't publish an allowance for regular members; admins can send 50 new message requests per day to unconnected members of their group.

Do you need Sales Navigator for the Group Members Messenger in CompLeadly?

Yes. For the Group Members Messenger, CompLeadly only accepts a Sales Navigator people search with a group filter as the audience, so you need your own Sales Navigator license. The feature is part of the Premium plan, and you can try it during the 10-day trial without a credit card.
