LinkedIn private mode hides who you are when you look at other people's profiles: you show up in their viewer list only as “LinkedIn Member,” with no name and no other details. You turn it on under “Settings & Privacy,” “Visibility” and “Visibility when viewing other profiles.” The catch: on a free account, you also stop seeing who viewed your own profile. **Last updated: 2 October 2026.**

## What is LinkedIn private mode? The three profile viewing options

LinkedIn calls the setting “Visibility when viewing other profiles.” It controls what someone learns about you when you open their profile, and it has exactly three levels.

| Option (LinkedIn's wording) | What the person you view sees | Your own viewer list on a free account |
| --------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------- |
| “Your name and headline” | Your name, headline, location and industry | visible |
| “Private profile characteristics” | Semi-private details such as job title, company, school and industry | hidden |
| “Private mode” | Only “LinkedIn Member” | hidden |

In private mode, your visit appears as “LinkedIn Member” with the note “This person is viewing profiles in private mode,” and LinkedIn shares nothing else about you. The middle option is a compromise. The other person learns roughly where the visit came from, not who it was. If you work at a small company or hold a rare job title, though, that description can point straight at you.

## How to turn on LinkedIn private mode, step by step

### On desktop

1. Click the “Me” icon at the top of your homepage.
2. Select “Settings & Privacy.”
3. Click “Visibility” in the left pane.
4. Under “Visibility of your profile & network,” click “Visibility when viewing other profiles.”
5. Pick “Private mode” or one of the other two options.

There is no save button. In LinkedIn's words: “Your changes will be saved automatically.” The new setting applies right away.

### In the LinkedIn app

1. Tap your profile photo.
2. Tap “Settings & Privacy.”
3. Tap “Visibility.”
4. Under “Visibility of your profile & network,” tap “Visibility when viewing other profiles” and choose your level.

One detail trips people up. Opening someone's mini profile from the search suggestions already counts. LinkedIn treats it as a profile view that may send the member a notification. If you want to research quietly, switch modes before you start searching, not right before you click a profile.

Then switch back. People who turn on private mode for one quick lookup and forget about it stay invisible and wonder why nobody visits their profile in return.

## What you give up with LinkedIn private browsing

On a free account, anonymity is a trade. LinkedIn puts it plainly: “If you have a Basic (free) account, and choose to browse in private mode, you won't be able to see who's viewed your profile either.” If you won't be seen, you won't see anyone. The rule covers the semi-private option too: on a free account you must choose “Your name and headline” to see your own viewer history. Not that a free account shows much: you get the three most recent viewers from the last 90 days.

Premium changes that. LinkedIn's comparison table lists “Private browsing” for Premium Career, Premium Business, Premium All-in-One, Sales Navigator Core and Recruiter Lite. The private mode help page adds: “With a Premium account, you can browse in private mode and still see the list of people who viewed your profile in the last 90 days. This isn't possible with a Basic (free) account.”

LinkedIn contradicts itself here. The same comparison table and the page on Basic versus Premium differences give Premium subscribers up to 365 days of viewer data. The private mode page says the last 90 days. LinkedIn doesn't explain whether private mode really cuts the window to 90 days. Plan on 90 days while you browse privately and you won't be surprised.

What nobody gets, Premium or not, is other people's names. “You can't view the names of members who've chosen to view your profile in private mode, even if you have a Premium account.” You also can't block private viewers or make them reveal themselves. For how the viewer list works in detail, what free and Premium accounts see and where to find it, read [LinkedIn profile views: who viewed my profile?](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-profile-views)

## Can you view a LinkedIn profile without signing in?

Only the public profile. LinkedIn describes that setting as controlling which sections “are eligible for display to people who are not signed in to LinkedIn” and which can show up in search tools like Google or Bing. Anything the member hasn't made public stays out of reach without a login.

Even a public profile often gives you only a short look. LinkedIn says people without an account “may be prompted to sign up or sign in to LinkedIn to view parts of your public profile,” and elsewhere: “In order to see your full profile, visitors may need to log in to their LinkedIn accounts.” Expect a sign-in prompt sooner rather than later.

Whether a signed-out view shows up in the member's viewer list is not covered on these help pages. For a truly anonymous LinkedIn view, use the route LinkedIn does document: signed in, with private mode on.

Sources: [LinkedIn Help: Control your public LinkedIn profile](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a528138) and [LinkedIn Help: LinkedIn public profile visibility](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a518980), both retrieved 2 October 2026.

## How do I make my LinkedIn profile private?

Private mode and a private profile are two separate things. Private mode controls how you appear to others. To hide your own profile from people who aren't signed in and from search engines, you need your public profile settings.

### Turn off public visibility on desktop

1. Click the “Me” icon at the top of your homepage.
2. Click “View Profile.”
3. Click the Edit icon next to “Public profile & URL” in the right pane.
4. Toggle “Your profile's public visibility” to “Off.”

### In the app

1. Tap your profile photo.
2. Tap “Settings.”
3. Tap “Visibility.”
4. Under “Visibility of your profile & network,” tap “Edit your public profile.”

Know two consequences before you flip the switch. First, search engines are slow: LinkedIn says it may take “several weeks or even months” for Google, Yahoo or Bing to reflect the change, and LinkedIn doesn't control that. Second, account recovery depends on it. According to LinkedIn, turning off your public profile could prevent you from recovering your account if you lose access to your primary email address, because LinkedIn may require your public profile URL.

### The second switch: Off-LinkedIn visibility

LinkedIn lists two settings for visibility outside the platform: your public profile and “Off-LinkedIn Visibility, excluding search tools,” formerly known as “sharing data with third parties.” You'll find it under “Settings & Privacy,” in the “Visibility” section, as “Off-LinkedIn visibility.” Switch the toggle to “Off” to opt out. If you really want to pull your profile back, change both.

## Why sales, recruiting and job seekers should stay visible

Our advice is simple: if you sell, recruit or apply for jobs, stay on “Your name and headline.” A visible profile view is often your first point of contact. The other person sees your name, headline, location and industry before you've written a word, so when your connection request lands, your name is already familiar. A “LinkedIn Member” leaves nothing to respond to, and LinkedIn won't reveal that name even to Premium subscribers.

It works the other way too. On a free account, you only see who looked back at you if your own visits are visible. Those return visits come from people who are paying attention to you right now.

### In sales

Visit first, request second. The visit puts your name in front of the prospect, and a connection request with a short personal note builds on it. Our [LinkedIn connection message templates](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-connection-message-templates) give you wording that fits. Whether to follow someone or connect right away is covered in [LinkedIn follow vs. connect](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-follow-vs-connect), and [What is prospecting?](https://compleadly.com/blog/what-is-prospecting) shows where the visit sits in the path from finding a prospect to booking a call.

### In recruiting

Candidates notice when someone takes an interest in their profile. When a recruiter visits visibly, the message that follows isn't a pure cold approach anymore. For finding candidates systematically, see our guide to [active sourcing on LinkedIn](https://compleadly.com/blog/active-sourcing-linkedin).

### When you're job hunting

When you apply, you want to be seen. A visible visit to the recruiter or the hiring manager shows interest without pushing, and a visit back is a good sign. Private mode throws both away. To make your profile easy for recruiters to find, read [Open to Work on LinkedIn](https://compleadly.com/blog/open-to-work-linkedin), and for common traps, [10 common LinkedIn mistakes when job hunting](https://compleadly.com/blog/10-common-linkedin-mistakes-when-job-hunting-and-how-to-avoid-them).

### When private mode makes sense

For research with no plan to reach out. You're checking competitors' profiles, rereading someone's background before a meeting, or just browsing. Turn private mode on, finish the research and switch back to “Your name and headline” right after.

## How CompLeadly helps with visible profile views

CompLeadly works through your own LinkedIn account. It has no anonymous mode of its own: how your visit appears is decided by your LinkedIn setting. With “Your name and headline,” the contact sees the visit in their list, which is exactly the point.

- **Profile visits as a step of their own** (“Visit & Follow,” following is optional): 25 visits a day on the free version, no tool cap from Basic up. Automatic following during the visit starts with Basic.
- **Profile viewers and followers as an audience:** your profile viewers, your followers and the profiles you follow can serve as the audience for connecting, messages, InMails, visits and exports, each on the plan of the feature you use. The walkthrough is in the knowledge base article [Using profile visitors and followers as target audiences](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/using-profile-visitors-and-followers-as-target-audiences).
- **After the visit:** a connection request with or without a note (2 a day on the free version, no tool cap from Basic up), an opener as the first message once someone accepts, and follow-ups if there's no reply (1 a day each on the free version, unlimited from Basic up). Full multi-step workflows start with Basic; the free version runs single steps.

**In sales,** a LinkedIn or Sales Navigator search becomes your audience, and from Basic up the workflow runs from visit to connection request, opener and follow-ups. **In recruiting,** a Recruiter Lite search, pipeline or saved search is the source, using your own Recruiter Lite license, typically with one workflow per open role: profile visit, connection request with opener, then follow-ups. See [CompLeadly for recruiters](https://compleadly.com/use-cases/recruiters). **When job hunting,** you turn a people search for recruiters and hiring managers at the companies you want to work for into an audience and use the standard steps: visit, connection request with a note, opener and follow-up. That works on the free version too, within its daily limits.

You start with a 10-day free trial with every feature unlocked and no credit card required. After that, your account switches to the free version automatically, with the basic features and daily limits. Plans are on the [pricing page](https://compleadly.com/pricing), and every feature with its plan is on the [features page](https://compleadly.com/features).

## Frequently asked questions: LinkedIn private mode

What is LinkedIn private mode?

LinkedIn private mode is one of three options under “Visibility when viewing other profiles.” When you view a profile with it on, you appear in that person's viewer list only as “LinkedIn Member,” with no name and no other details. You set it on desktop and in the app under “Settings & Privacy” and “Visibility.”

Can someone see that I viewed their profile in private mode?

They see that a “LinkedIn Member” viewed their profile in private mode, but not who it was. LinkedIn says even Premium subscribers can't see the names of private mode viewers. Keep in mind that opening a mini profile from the search suggestions already counts as a view, so switch modes before you search.

Can I still see who viewed my profile while browsing privately?

Not on a free account: LinkedIn hides your own viewer list, and that also applies to the semi-private option. Browsing visibly, a free account shows the three most recent viewers from the last 90 days. With Premium the list stays visible, for the last 90 days according to LinkedIn's private mode page. For regular browsing, LinkedIn gives Premium subscribers up to 365 days.

Can I view a LinkedIn profile without an account?

Only the public profile, and only the parts the member has made public. LinkedIn notes that people without an account may be prompted to sign in to see parts of a public profile. LinkedIn doesn't say whether such a view appears in the member's viewer list.

How do I make my LinkedIn profile private?

Click “Me,” then “View Profile,” click the Edit icon next to “Public profile & URL” and toggle “Your profile's public visibility” to “Off.” There is also an “Off-LinkedIn visibility” switch under “Visibility.” LinkedIn says search engines may take weeks or months to reflect the change.
