Connect first, then start a conversation on LinkedIn, then email—but only if your contact wants you to. In that order, LinkedIn and email work well together in B2B. Move to email when someone asks for materials, wants to arrange a meeting by email, or explicitly gives you permission to write to them. You can find the email addresses of many first-degree connections in their contact information. Even so, only use an address once your contact has said yes.

This article walks you through the process step by step, with an example sequence and templates. **As of 23 September 2026.**

## The process in five steps

1. **Connect:** Send a connection request to people who fit your offer, with or without a short note.
2. **Start a conversation on LinkedIn:** Once they accept, send a first message that opens a conversation rather than pitching an offer.
3. **Wait for a reply:** If they do not respond, follow up on LinkedIn no more than once or twice.
4. **Ask for permission to email:** Only when your contact shows interest should you ask whether you can send them something by email. Or they may ask you to.
5. **Send the email:** Send it to the address they give you or approve, and refer to your conversation. Send further emails only about what they asked for.

Here’s why the order matters: On LinkedIn, the other person decides whether to accept your request and reply. Once you email them, they no longer have that choice. So ask first.

## Where to find the email address

### Contact information for your first-degree connections

LinkedIn displays contact and personal information in the introduction section of a profile only “if they choose to share this information”. You can find it on your connection’s profile under _Show contact info_. Source:[LinkedIn Help: Viewing a connection’s contact information](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a547033?lang=de), accessed on 23 September 2026.

For email addresses, the default setting makes the primary address visible “only to your direct connections on LinkedIn”. Members can change this in their settings to _Visible only to you_,_Direct connections_,_First- and second-degree connections_ or _All LinkedIn members_. Source:[LinkedIn Help: Visibility of your email address](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a523134?lang=de), accessed on 23 September 2026\. For you, that means you usually cannot see the address before connecting. Afterwards, you can see it for connections who have not hidden it.

### LinkedIn data export

Via _Settings & Privacy → Data privacy → Get a copy of your data_ lets you download a list of your connections. LinkedIn notes that not all email addresses are included: You only get addresses from connections who have allowed their connections to view or download them. Source: [LinkedIn Help: Exporting connections from LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a566336?lang=de), accessed on 23 September 2026.

### What about Sales Navigator?

Sales Navigator is not an email database. Email visibility there also depends on the member’s settings. Even the CRM contact creation feature in Sales Navigator, which LinkedIn offers only with CRM Sync on the Advanced Plus plan, transfers the email address only “dependent on a member’s settings”, according to LinkedIn. Source: [Sales Navigator Help: Contact Creation](https://www.linkedin.com/help/sales-navigator/answer/a170004?lang=en), accessed on 23 September 2026\. Sales Navigator offers no way to access hidden addresses.

Our article covers how to research addresses outside LinkedIn, for example through a company’s legal notice, company email patterns, or email finders, [Find email address](https://compleadly.com/blog/email-finder), and why LinkedIn is the better way to make first contact.

## Why you ask first

Someone who has said yes to an email in chat expects your message, opens it, and replies. A cold email sent to an address from their contact information, by contrast, often lands in spam unread—and damages the relationship you built on LinkedIn.

The simplest approach is: **Ask them to give you their address in the chat when they say yes.** That way, you know it’s current, that your contact expects an email from you there, and what the email should be about.

What doesn’t work: exporting a list of all your 1st-degree connections with their email addresses and putting everyone into an email sequence. That’s cold email with an extra step. Don’t do it.

## Step by step: from connecting to email

### 1\. Define your target audience and connect

Find people on LinkedIn or in Sales Navigator for whom your offer is relevant, and send them a connection request. Whether a note improves the acceptance rate depends on your target audience. You can find the considerations in [Connecting on LinkedIn: with or without a message](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-connections-with-or-without-a-message-what-works-better).

### 2\. Start a conversation after they accept

Your first message after connecting (the “opener”) asks a question or refers to something in their profile. No link, no attachment, no request for a meeting. The goal is to get a reply.

### 3\. Follow up, but not indefinitely

If they don’t reply, follow up once after a few days, or twice at most. If your contact replies, you take over yourself.

### 4\. Offer to email rather than assume you can

If they’re interested, ask directly: May you send them the materials, proposal or meeting options by email, and to which address? Ask them to give you their address even if you can already see it in their contact information. That way, you know it’s current and they expect to hear from you there.

### 5\. Record their consent

Record in your CRM that your contact wants an email.

### 6\. Write the email

In the first sentence, remind them how you know each other, and send exactly what you discussed. If you want to invite them to a newsletter, ask them to sign up themselves, ideally with double opt-in.

## Example sequence: LinkedIn first, email only with consent

| When | Channel | Content | Condition |
| ---------------- | -------- | ------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------- |
| Day 0 | LinkedIn | Connection request, optionally with a short note | Person fits the target audience |
| after acceptance | LinkedIn | Opener with a question | Connection request accepted |
| a few days later | LinkedIn | Short follow-up | no reply |
| after a reply | LinkedIn | Personal conversation, offer to email | Contact has replied |
| after consent | Email | Materials, proposal or meeting options | Contact has agreed to receive the email or asked for it |

Without a reply or consent, the sequence ends on LinkedIn. There is no “email them instead” step.

## Templates

The names are examples. Adapt each template to the person you’re contacting.

### Opener after connecting

> Hi Jana, thanks for connecting! I saw that you’re currently building your sales team in Austria. How are you finding your first people to talk to there?

### Follow-up without a reply

> Hi Jana, a quick follow-up on my question from last week. If the timing isn’t right, that’s completely fine.

### Offer to email

> Thanks for your reply! I have a two-page overview with two examples. May I email it to you? If so, which address should I use?

### The first email after consent

> **Subject:** The overview from our LinkedIn chat
> Hi Jana, as discussed on LinkedIn yesterday, here’s the overview. \[Content\] If you’d rather continue on LinkedIn afterward, just let me know and I won’t email you again.

## How CompLeadly helps

CompLeadly automates the LinkedIn part of the sequence and, from Premium onwards, sends the emails too. You decide who receives an email.

- **Connecting, openers and follow-ups:** Connection requests, the first message after acceptance and follow-ups run as a sequence. A follow-up is sent only when your previous message has gone unanswered for the number of days you set. If the contact has replied, no further follow-up message is sent. CompLeadly does not send the opener if the contact has already replied ([Details](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/the-opener-is-not-sent-if-there-are-two-messages-from-you-in-the-chat-or-if-a-contact-has-already-replied)).
- **Exporting 1st-degree connections:** The _Export your network_ feature exports your connections to a file. With the _Export detailed profile data_ option, CompLeadly visits each profile and adds fields such as email, phone number and website. It only reads what your contact has made visible to you in their contact information. Detailed contact information is not included in the free plan ([Network export guide](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/tutorial-network-export),[Export email addresses of LinkedIn contacts](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/export-email-from-linkedin-contacts)). Export only what you really need.
- **Sending emails (from Premium):** The _Auto Email_ feature sends emails to an imported target audience through your own email connection (SMTP server, sender address and your provider’s login credentials) — with a subject line, text, placeholders, attachments and an optional blind copy, for example to your CRM. If an address is missing from the import list, CompLeadly can use the address saved for that contact if you choose. With _Message profiles only once_, each contact receives no more than one email. Here’s how to set it up: [Automatic email feature](https://compleadly.com/knowledge/automatic-email-function-in-compleadly).

Use it according to the process above: Only contacts who have said yes belong in the email target audience. An export of all contacts with email addresses is not a mailing list.

Write each message to fit the profile. CompLeadly manages the pace for you.

After the 10-day trial with all features, you can continue using CompLeadly for free with the basic features and daily limits, such as 2 connection requests, 1 opener and 1 follow-up per day, with each step started individually. Full workflows are available from Basic. The free plan does not include email sending. You can find all plans on the [Pricing page](https://compleadly.com/pricing).

## The same process for recruiting and job searches

The process works the same way when you contact candidates or look for a job yourself. In the **recruiting** you build your target audience in CompLeadly from a LinkedIn people search, a Sales Navigator search or, if you have Recruiter access, Recruiter searches, pipelines and saved searches. You send connection requests, start conversations with an opening message and follow up. You only send a CV or suggested meeting times by email if the candidate wants you to. Read more on the [for Recruiters](https://compleadly.com/use-cases/recruiters) page. As a **job seeker**, you reach out directly to recruiters, hiring managers or people at a company you want to work for: build a target audience from a people search, connect, send a short first message and follow up. You send your application by email if the other person asks you to. You’ll find tips in [Avoiding mistakes when looking for a job on LinkedIn](https://compleadly.com/blog/10-common-linkedin-mistakes-when-job-hunting-and-how-to-avoid-them) and in the article about [Open to Work](https://compleadly.com/blog/open-to-work-linkedin). The free plan’s daily limits apply here too.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where can I see my LinkedIn contacts’ email addresses?

On your connection’s profile, under _Show contact info_. You can only see the address if the person has made it available to you. By default, a primary email address is visible to direct connections, but each member can restrict this.

### Does Sales Navigator provide email addresses?

No, it does not have its own email database. In Sales Navigator, too, email availability depends on the member’s settings. LinkedIn states this for creating CRM contacts in Advanced Plus: the email address is passed on only if the member’s settings allow it.

### How do I ask for an email address without seeming pushy?

Offer something specific that works better by email than in chat, such as an overview or meeting options, and ask whether you can send it and to which address. If your contact declines, stay on LinkedIn.

### Can I automate the email step?

Yes, in CompLeadly from Premium onwards, using the _Auto Email_ feature for an imported target audience. Only contacts who have said yes belong in the email target audience.
