Social selling means you sell through relationships you build on social networks instead of through cold first contacts. On LinkedIn, that means finding the right people, staying visible, connecting with context and starting conversations before you pitch anything. Here is how to do it step by step, and how to tell whether it works.

## What is social selling?

LinkedIn's own definition is short: “social selling is a strategic method for sellers to connect and build relationships with prospects through social networks.” Source: [LinkedIn Sales Solutions: What Is Social Selling](https://business.linkedin.com/sell/resources/sales-terms/social-selling), retrieved October 3, 2026.

The key word is method. Social selling is not a channel or a tool. It is a sequence: relevance first, then contact, then conversation, then offer. If you explain your product the moment someone accepts your request, you are cold calling with a different tool. That can make sense sometimes, but it is a different thing.

The Social Selling Index (SSI) is the metric LinkedIn built around this method. How to check it and how to read your score is covered in our article on the [LinkedIn SSI](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-ssi-the-social-selling-index-and-how-to-use-it-for-greater-success). This article is about the method behind it.

## Social selling vs. cold calling vs. social media marketing

The three terms get mixed up a lot. The difference is who speaks, to whom, and when an offer comes in.

| Aspect | Social selling | Cold outreach | Social media marketing |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Who acts | The salesperson, with their own profile | The salesperson | The company, with its Page or ads |
| Recipients | Selected people, one at a time | Selected people, one at a time | Many people at once |
| First contact | After visibility: a comment, a profile visit, a connection request with context | No warm-up: call, email, message | Post or ad in the feed |
| When the offer comes | When the conversation calls for it | In the first contact | In the post or on the landing page |
| What you measure | Acceptance rate, reply rate, meetings | Reach rate, meetings | Reach, clicks, leads |

Social selling compared with cold calling and social media marketing: a phone facing closed doors, connected contacts in conversation and a megaphone facing a crowd

In practice the three work together. A good post on your company Page gives you a reason to send a message. A call is easier when the person already knows you from the comments. Social selling does not replace the other routes, it warms them up. How first contact without a warm-up works is covered in our article on [cold calling](https://compleadly.com/blog/what-is-cold-calling).

## The four pillars of the Social Selling Index

LinkedIn describes the SSI as a score from 0 to 100 that shows how well someone can “establish a professional brand, find the right prospects, engage with key insights, and build relationships on LinkedIn”. Those are the four pillars. Source: [LinkedIn Sales Solutions: From SSI to AI](https://business.linkedin.com/sell/resources/SSI), retrieved October 3, 2026.

On the same page, LinkedIn now says the SSI “no longer accurately reflects the modern sales environment” and recommends easing the pressure around SSI scores. So use the four pillars as a structure for your work, and treat the score as a thermometer, not a target. What feeds into each pillar and how to check your score is covered in depth in the [SSI article](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-ssi-the-social-selling-index-and-how-to-use-it-for-greater-success). The six steps below follow the same logic.

## Social selling on LinkedIn in 6 steps

![Social Selling auf LinkedIn in 6 Schritten als Weg mit sechs Stationen: Zielkunden, Profil, Suche, Kommentar, Vernetzung, Termin](https://media.compleadly.de/media/7615db5b9b7d399b6216f21c9b0e5114d0a04a41a1d8efb5f4f379c6d775f914.jpg)

Social selling on LinkedIn in 6 steps shown as a path with six stations: target accounts, profile, search, comment, connection, meeting

### 1\. Define your target accounts

Social selling only works with a short, clear list. Write down which companies fit your offer (industry, size, region) and which roles make the decision there. The tighter the description, the more relevant everything you post and write afterwards. If you are stuck, the free [ICP generator](https://compleadly.com/free-tools/icp-generator) turns a description of your best existing customers into a first draft with roles, buying triggers and exclusion criteria.

### 2\. Write your profile for your buyers

Anyone who reacts to your comment or your request looks at your profile first. Your headline should say who you help with what, not just your job title. Your About section explains the problem you solve in your customers' words. A post from the last few weeks shows you are active. For the headline, try the free [LinkedIn headline generator](https://compleadly.com/free-tools/linkedin-headline-generator).

### 3\. Listen and comment

Follow the people on your list and read along for a week before you write. What do they post about, what bothers them, which projects are running? A comment with your own thought or a question is the quietest first contact LinkedIn offers. It puts your name in their notifications without asking for anything. “Great post” does nothing.

### 4\. Connect with context

Send the connection request when there is a reason: a mutual connection, a discussion under a post, an event. LinkedIn recommends three things for the note: “How you found the person or what you have in common”, “Why you'd like to connect now” and “A clear and polite tone”. The note can be up to 200 characters. With a free account, LinkedIn says you can add a note to up to three requests per month; Premium members can add one to every request. Source: [LinkedIn Help: Personalize invitations to connect](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a563153), retrieved October 3, 2026\. As of October 2026.

Whether requests with or without a note work better depends on your audience. Test both and compare acceptance rates. Templates for different occasions are in our [LinkedIn connection message templates](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-connection-message-templates).

### 5\. Start a conversation, not a pitch

Once someone accepts, don't send a product description. Send a short message about them. A question on a topic they posted about. An article that fits their project. A thought that saves them time. The offer comes when they describe a problem you can help with. Why this is not a detour is the subject of our article on [trust in sales](https://compleadly.com/blog/why-trust-is-the-most-important-factor-in-your-sales-success).

### 6\. Turn it into a meeting

When the conversation is going, propose a concrete next step: 20 minutes on a call, two time slots, a clear reason. Many social selling conversations don't stall for lack of interest. They stall because nobody proposes the next step.

## Templates: three messages to copy

The templates are short on purpose. Replace the placeholders in square brackets before you send.

**Connection note after a comment:**

Hi \[First name\], we just traded thoughts under \[Name\]'s post on \[topic\]. Your point about \[detail\] stuck with me. I'd be glad to connect.

**First message after they accept:**

Thanks for connecting, \[First name\]. You mentioned that \[topic\] is on your plate right now. How are you approaching it: more \[approach A\] or \[approach B\]?

**Proposing a meeting:**

\[First name\], that sounds like what we solved for \[similar company or industry\]. Up for a 20-minute chat? \[Day 1\] or \[Day 2\] would work for me, or suggest another time.

Before sending, you can check length and structure with the free [message check](https://compleadly.com/free-tools/message-check).

## Measuring social selling: SSI, acceptance rate, reply rate, meetings

The SSI shows whether you are active across all four pillars. Whether your social selling sells is something it does not show, and LinkedIn says so itself. Measure the chain from contact to meeting instead, every week, with the same formulas.

| Metric | Calculation | What it tells you |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------- |
| SSI | LinkedIn's score, 0 to 100 | Whether you are active in all four pillars |
| Acceptance rate | Accepted requests divided by requests sent | Whether audience, profile and note fit together |
| Reply rate | Replies divided by first messages | Whether your first message is relevant |
| Meetings | Calls booked per week | Whether you turn conversations into a next step |
| Pending requests | Requests with no response | Whether you are inviting too broadly |

Measuring social selling as a funnel from requests sent to replies to a booked meeting, with an SSI gauge beside it

LinkedIn publishes no benchmarks for good rates. Compare yourself with your own previous month and change one thing at a time: audience, profile, note or first message. Otherwise you won't know what worked. How many pending requests is too many depends on the invitation limit, which LinkedIn doesn't put a number on either. What LinkedIn does say is in our article on the [LinkedIn connection limit](https://compleadly.com/blog/linkedin-connection-limit).

## What you can automate and what you can't

Social selling runs on judgment: who to approach, what to refer to, when to propose a meeting. That stays your job. What you can automate are the repetitive steps that follow fixed rules anyway. With CompLeadly, which runs locally on your own computer as a desktop app, it looks like this:

- **Audience from a search:** A LinkedIn people search or a Sales Navigator search becomes the audience for the next steps.
- **Profile visit as first touch:** A visit shows you in the person's viewer list, depending on your visibility setting and their LinkedIn account.
- **Connect with or without a note:** The note can include placeholders such as the first name and be up to 270 characters. On request, CompLeadly withdraws pending requests after a number of days you set.
- **Openers and follow-ups:** A first message to new connections and follow-ups that stop as soon as someone replies.
- **Acceptance rate in view:** The dashboard shows the acceptance rate, and a weekly report shows the rate per feature.

Don't automate comments on your target buyers' posts, the answer to a real question, or the meeting proposal. That is where the trust social selling depends on is built. And be sparing with data: reach out to people your offer is relevant to, and leave alone those who don't respond.

## Social selling in sales, recruiting and job search

The method stays the same. Only the goal changes.

- **Sales:** You build an audience of decision-makers at your target companies, visit profiles, connect with context and hold conversations until a meeting. In CompLeadly, the Sales Navigator search becomes the audience, and you see the acceptance rate per audience.
- **Recruiting:** Candidates respond to recruiters they have noticed before. CompLeadly also uses searches, pipelines and saved searches from LinkedIn Recruiter Lite as audiences, for example one workflow per role with profile visit, connection and follow-up. More on the [recruiters](https://compleadly.com/use-cases/recruiters) page.
- **Job seekers:** Instead of sending résumés to generic inboxes, connect with team leads and recruiters at the employers you want and comment on their posts. In CompLeadly, a people search for those roles becomes the audience, including in the free version with daily limits. Common mistakes are covered in our article on [LinkedIn job hunting mistakes](https://compleadly.com/blog/10-common-linkedin-mistakes-when-job-hunting-and-how-to-avoid-them).

## Common social selling mistakes

- **Pitching in the connection note.** Explain your product in 200 characters and you get fewer accepts and no conversations.
- **An audience that is too broad.** The more people without any link to you that you invite, the more requests stay pending. LinkedIn explicitly names ignored and long-pending invitations as a reason for invitation limits ([LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a551012)).
- **Only sending, never listening.** Without comments and posts you have read, you lack context for the first message.
- **SSI as the goal.** A rising score without meetings is activity, not sales.
- **No next step.** Good conversations fizzle out when nobody proposes a meeting.

You can try all of this with CompLeadly: 10 days free with every feature, no credit card. After that, your account switches automatically to the free version with basic features and daily limits, for example 2 connection requests and 25 profile visits per day. Plans and prices are on the [pricing page](https://compleadly.com/pricing).

## Frequently asked questions: social selling

What is social selling in simple terms?

Social selling is a sales method in which you build relationships with potential customers on social networks like LinkedIn before you offer anything. You find the right people, stay visible through posts and comments, connect with context and hold conversations until a meeting.

What is the difference between social selling and social media marketing?

In social selling, the salesperson reaches out to selected individuals from their own profile. Social media marketing uses the company Page and ads to reach many people at once. The two complement each other: company content gives you reasons for personal conversations.

How does social selling on LinkedIn work?

In six steps: define your target accounts, write your profile for your buyers, read and comment on your prospects' posts, connect with context, start a conversation instead of a pitch once they accept, and turn the conversation into a meeting.

What is the Social Selling Index?

The SSI is a score from 0 to 100 that LinkedIn builds from four areas: professional brand, finding the right people, engaging with insights and building relationships. LinkedIn itself now says the score no longer accurately reflects modern selling. Use it to compare against your own earlier score.

How do you measure social selling success?

Measure the chain from contact to meeting: acceptance rate of connection requests, reply rate to your first message, and meetings booked per week. Compare the numbers with your previous month and change only one thing at a time.
