Cold calling is the first sales contact with someone who does not know you and has not asked to hear from you. In the strict sense it means an unsolicited phone call; in everyday sales language it also covers cold emails and cold messages. In B2B it works best when it is no longer quite cold: once you are connected on LinkedIn and have exchanged two messages, your call is a scheduled meeting, not an interruption.

This guide defines cold calling, explains why cold calls convert so poorly in B2B and walks you through a warmer first contact on LinkedIn, with a channel comparison and templates for your connection note, opener and follow-up. **Last updated: 28 September 2026.**

## What is cold calling? A definition

Put simply: you contact a person you have no business relationship with and who has not invited the contact. “Cold” describes the relationship, not the channel. You will meet three forms in sales:

- **Phone (the classic cold call):** You call unannounced. The other person has to decide on the spot whether to listen.
- **Email (cold email):** You write to the inbox of someone who does not know you and is not expecting your message.
- **Message on a network:** On LinkedIn, for example, a connection request with a note, an InMail or the first message after connecting.

The opposite is warm outreach. There you contact people who already know you: existing connections, people who reacted to your post, or someone who has shown interest on their own. Between the two sits a transition, and that is the part you can design. An accepted connection request is not a customer yet, but it is no longer a cold contact either.

### Cold calling in B2B and B2C

The difference lies in the audience. In B2B you contact people in their professional role, such as the managing director of an engineering firm or the head of sales at a software company. You sell to an organisation, several people usually have a say, and a decision can take weeks. In B2C you contact private individuals who decide for themselves.

Two things follow for B2B sales. Finding the right person is already half the work. And a single call rarely decides anything; you need several touchpoints. Both point towards a channel where people state their role themselves and where a conversation can run over several days.

## Why cold calling converts so poorly in B2B

We have not found reliable, current figures on cold calling success rates in B2B, so we do not quote any here. The reasons for weak results are visible in the anatomy of a single call, though.

### The call interrupts

The person you call is in a meeting, writing a proposal or driving. Your call demands immediate attention for a topic they did not choose. The natural reaction is to end the conversation as quickly as possible. That says nothing about your offer and everything about the timing.

### Neither side has context

The person on the other end does not know who you are and cannot check during the call. You often know little more than their name and title. There is no profile you have both seen, no mutual connection, no earlier message. All the trust has to be built in the first few seconds.

### Someone sits between you and the decision-maker

In mid-sized companies and corporations, calls often go through reception or an assistant whose job is to filter unplanned calls. Reaching the person you actually want to speak to usually takes several attempts.

### Every attempt costs your time one to one

You cannot run two calls at once. Voicemail, callback requests, the wrong extension: every failed attempt takes as long as a call that works. That is the core weakness of cold calling as a first step. It does not scale with your effort, only with your hours.

None of this means the phone is dead in B2B. It only loses as the first step. As the third step, after connecting and a short exchange, a call is an agreed meeting, and the other person picks up.

## Cold calling vs. email vs. LinkedIn

| Criterion | Phone | Email | LinkedIn |
| ------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Preparation | Find the number and direct line, write a call script | Find a valid address, write subject and body | Find the person via search, read the profile, look for a reason to reach out |
| When the other person responds | Immediately, the moment you call | Whenever they want | Whenever they want; the request waits |
| Scalability | Low: one conversation at a time | High, sending can be scheduled | Plannable, capped by LinkedIn’s invitation and messaging limits |
| Context | Only what you say on the phone | Signature, maybe a website | Profile, career history, mutual connections, posts on both sides |
| Who says yes to the contact? | Nobody, the call just happens | Nobody, the email just arrives | The other person, by accepting your request |

LinkedIn does not win this comparison because it is faster. It wins because both sides can see who they are dealing with before the first word, and because accepting your request is the other person’s own yes to the contact. Email and phone still have their place, just later in the sequence. If you need an address for that later step, our guide to the [email finder](https://compleadly.com/blog/email-finder) covers where addresses come from.

## A warm first contact on LinkedIn, step by step

This sequence replaces the cold call as your first step. It is slower than a phone call, but each step builds on the one before.

### 1\. Define your audience

Decide whom you want to reach: role, industry, company size, region. The sharper the definition, the better your messages will fit. You build the list with LinkedIn people search or Sales Navigator. If you still need to describe your ideal customer, the free [ICP generator](https://compleadly.com/free-tools/icp-generator) helps.

### 2\. Visit the profile and find a reason

Before you connect, read the profile. You are looking for a concrete reason to reach out: a new role, a post, a job ad, a new office. If there is none, a reference to their role is enough. What you find here will carry your opener later.

### 3\. Connect, with or without a note

A note on a connection request can be up to 200 characters long. With a free account, LinkedIn lets you add a personalised message to only a few connection requests per month (three or five, depending on the help page); Premium members can personalise all their invitations, though connection request limits may still apply. Source: [LinkedIn Help: Personalize invitations to connect](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a563153?lang=en), retrieved on 28 September 2026\. Whether a note improves acceptance depends on your audience, so test both.

The number of invitations is capped as well. If you hit the limit, LinkedIn says the restriction typically lasts one week. Source: [LinkedIn Help: Invitation limit reached](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a550555?lang=en), retrieved on 28 September 2026\. Spread your invitations across the week instead of sending them all on one day. The free [LinkedIn limits calculator](https://compleadly.com/free-tools/linkedin-limits-calculator) helps you plan the numbers.

### 4\. Send an opener once they accept

Your first message after connecting opens a conversation; it does not sell. One question that relates to their profile. No link, no attachment, no meeting request. The goal is a reply, not a deal.

### 5\. Follow up, twice at most

If there is no reply, send a reminder a few days later, and a second one if needed. The second follow-up can close the conversation politely. After that you stop. If they reply, you take over personally.

### 6\. Move to email or a meeting

Once your contact shows interest, suggest the next step: a short phone call, a video call, or documents by email if they want them. Now the call is no longer a cold call; it is agreed. To map out the whole sequence with timings, use the free [outreach sequence planner](https://compleadly.com/free-tools/outreach-sequence-planner).

## Templates for your connection note, opener and follow-up

Names and details are examples. Adapt every template to the person you are writing to. You can check whether your text is too long or too salesy with the free [message check](https://compleadly.com/free-tools/message-check).

### Connection note (under 200 characters)

> Hi Sarah, I read your post on sales planning for 2027 and would like to connect. I work with sales teams in industrial manufacturing.

> Hi Tom, we both work around logistics software. Happy to connect.

### Opener after they accept

> Hi Tom, thanks for connecting! I saw you are opening a second office in Manchester. How are you finding your first customers there so far?

> Hi Sarah, thanks for accepting. In your post you mentioned that new business will be a focus in 2027\. Which channels does that run through for you today?

### First follow-up

> Hi Tom, a quick nudge on my question from last week. If it is not high on your list right now, that is completely fine.

### Second follow-up (closing)

> Hi Tom, I do not want to flood your inbox, so this is my last message on the topic. If it fits later, just reply here. Good luck with the new office!

### Moving to a meeting

> Thanks for the detailed reply! I have a couple of ideas on how other teams handle this. Would a 15-minute call next week work for you? Tuesday or Thursday morning would suit me.

## How CompLeadly helps

CompLeadly is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that runs the LinkedIn part of this sequence on your own computer, over your own IP. You write the words; the app handles the timing.

- **Audience:** You build your list from a LinkedIn people search, a Sales Navigator search or, with Recruiter access, from Recruiter searches. You can also import your own lists.
- **Profile visits:** The Auto-Visitor visits the profiles in your audience.
- **Connecting:** Connection requests with an optional note. Placeholders such as first name or company insert the details from the profile.
- **Opener:** The first message after acceptance. It is not sent if the contact has already replied or if two of your messages are already in the chat.
- **Follow-ups:** A follow-up only goes out once your previous message has gone unanswered for the number of days you set. If the contact replies, no further follow-up is sent, and the reply lands in Smart Chat, an inbox inside CompLeadly.
- **InMails to Open Profiles:** InMails to Open Profiles are free. You can send InMails only to Open Profiles and skip Open Profiles when connecting, so they stay available for free InMails.
- **Pace:** You set a daily limit for every feature, such as the maximum number of profiles to connect with per day. Expert mode adds pauses. Our knowledge base recommends around 50 connection requests a day; LinkedIn’s weekly invitation limit is around 200, and you can see your exact limit in the CompLeadly statistics.

You will find the step-by-step setup in the [CompLeadly guide](https://compleadly.com/knowledge), and an overview of all features on the [features page](https://compleadly.com/features).

After the 10-day trial with all features, you can keep using CompLeadly for free with the basic features and daily limits, for example 2 connection requests, 1 opener and 1 follow-up per day, each step started individually; full workflows start with Basic. See all plans on the [pricing page](https://compleadly.com/pricing).

## The same approach for recruiting and job hunting

Cold outreach is not limited to sales. Recruiters who call candidates out of the blue run into the same problems as salespeople: bad timing, no context, no agreement to talk. In **recruiting**, the same warm start works. You build your audience in CompLeadly from a LinkedIn people search, a Sales Navigator search or, with Recruiter access, from Recruiter searches, connect, open the conversation with an opener and follow up with messages that stop as soon as the candidate replies. More on the [page for recruiters](https://compleadly.com/use-cases/recruiters).

As a **job seeker**, you reverse the direction. Instead of applying blindly, you contact recruiters, hiring managers or people at your target employer directly: an audience from people search, a connection request, a short first message that refers to the role, one follow-up. On the free plan that is enough for a few targeted contacts a day. ## FAQ

### What is cold calling?

Cold calling is an unsolicited phone call to a potential customer who has no prior relationship with you. More broadly, the term covers any first sales contact that was not invited, including cold emails and cold messages on networks like LinkedIn.

### What is the difference between cold and warm outreach?

With cold outreach, the other person does not know you yet. With warm outreach there is already a link: you are connected, you have exchanged messages, or they have shown interest themselves. An accepted connection request followed by a short exchange turns a cold contact into a warm one.

### Does cold calling still work in B2B?

As a first step by phone, it works less and less, because the call interrupts and neither side has context. A sequence works better: connect on LinkedIn first, open a conversation, and schedule the call once there is interest.

### How do I start a conversation on LinkedIn?

After your connection request is accepted, ask one short question that relates to your contact’s profile: a new role, a post, a project. No link, no pitch and no meeting request in the first message.

### How often should I follow up?

Once or twice, a few days apart. The second follow-up can close the conversation politely. If your contact replies, you take over yourself.
