LinkedIn Premium Business vs. Sales Navigator: Which Plan for Sales?

Three ascending glass steps in cyan and navy with a glowing compass on the top step, symbolising the choice between a free LinkedIn account, Premium Business, and Sales Navigator

LinkedIn Premium Business is the plan LinkedIn pushes first when you click Upgrade. For prospecting it is often the wrong pick, in both directions: some jobs the free account handles just as well, others only Sales Navigator can do. This comparison shows you which of the three accounts fits the way you work, what LinkedIn itself says about each one, and where LinkedIn's own pages contradict each other. Last updated: 29 September 2026.

This article deliberately gives prices only as a range. Every plan with monthly and annual pricing is in our guide to how much LinkedIn Premium costs.

Short answer: free, LinkedIn Premium Business, or Sales Navigator?

Three cases, three answers. The evidence follows below.

  • Free is enough if you connect before you message and find your audience with the regular people search. Sooner or later you will hit the commercial use limit, but it resets every month.
  • Premium Business is enough if the search limit is your main brake, you want an Open Profile so strangers can message you, and 15 InMails a month cover the people outside your network.
  • Sales Navigator is mandatory if you want to slice your audience with more than 50 filters, need lead lists and saved searches with alerts, and can put 50 InMails a month to good use.

Comparison table: free vs. LinkedIn Premium Business vs. Sales Navigator Core

The table only contains what LinkedIn's pages said on 29 September 2026. Where LinkedIn contradicts itself, both figures are in the cell.

Two rows need a footnote. First, the search limit on Premium Business: the product page promises "Search for people and companies with no limits", while the help article on the commercial use limit is more careful and says an upgrade to Premium Business, Recruiter Lite, or Sales Navigator will "increase the number of profile searches and views". We do not treat those as the same statement. Second, profile viewers: the comparison table says 365 days, the FAQ on the same Premium page says the past 90 days. Which number applies to your account you will only see after upgrading.

What the free account really does

More than the upgrade prompts suggest. Three things you need to know.

The commercial use limit

LinkedIn switches the limit on when your activity indicates commercial use, "like hiring or prospecting". It resets "at midnight PST on the 1st of each calendar month". LinkedIn does not display how many searches you have left and will not lift the limit on request. The warning that you are close to the limit may not appear if you burn through the allowance too quickly. Source: LinkedIn Help: Commercial use limit, retrieved 29 September 2026.

According to the same article, these count toward the limit:

  • searching for profiles on LinkedIn.com and in the mobile app,
  • browsing profiles through the "People Also Viewed" section on profile pages,
  • viewing member profiles on the People tab of a LinkedIn Page.

These do not count:

  • searching for profiles by name in the search box at the top of every page,
  • browsing your first-degree connections on the Connections page,
  • searching for jobs on the Jobs page.

How many searches that is, LinkedIn does not say. The LinkedIn limits calculator helps you plan a daily volume anyway, and our guide to the LinkedIn search limit explains what happens once you reach it.

Messages to connections only

With a free account you can only message members you are connected to, according to LinkedIn Help. InMails to people outside your network require a paid plan. The one exception is Open Profiles: Premium members who have enabled that setting can be messaged by anyone for free. For free accounts LinkedIn caps the number of these messages per month but does not publish the figure. Sources: LinkedIn Help: InMail messages and LinkedIn Help: Open Profile messages, retrieved 29 September 2026. How to spot and message Open Profiles is covered in our guide to the LinkedIn Open Profile.

What that means for prospecting

The free account is a connecting account. The route is: narrow your audience with the people search, send a connection request, message after acceptance. If you work that way you need no InMails. The search limit remains the ceiling, and LinkedIn does not say where it is. The price you pay: no alerts, no lead lists, no InMails.

When the LinkedIn Premium Business plan is enough

On the German Sales Navigator comparison page LinkedIn describes Premium Business as a paid membership for professionals and executives who want to grow their personal brand and expand their network. Sales Navigator, by contrast, is "a sales platform built specifically for B2B sellers and sales teams". Source: Sales Navigator: compare plans (German page, FAQ section), retrieved 29 September 2026. That framing fits: Premium Business is a networking plan with a prospecting add-on, not a sales tool.

What the LinkedIn Premium Business plan actually includes, according to the product page and help articles as of 29 September 2026:

  • 15 InMail credits per month, with unused credits rolling over for three months; the cap is 45 accumulated credits.
  • A fresh allotment "on the first day of your billing cycle", not on the first of the month.
  • Every InMail that is accepted, declined, or answered within 90 days is credited back.
  • A second InMail to the same person is only possible once they have accepted and replied to the first one.
  • Extra credits cannot be purchased.
  • Open Profile: you can let any member message you for free.
  • Profile viewers for the past 365 days (table) or 90 days (FAQ), see above.
  • Full access to more than 25,000 LinkedIn Learning courses.

Sources: LinkedIn Premium Business, LinkedIn Help: InMail credits, LinkedIn Help: Follow-up InMails, LinkedIn Help: Additional InMail credits, retrieved 29 September 2026.

A Premium Business subscription on LinkedIn is enough in three situations. First, when the search limit is your only problem: you work with the regular people search but hit the wall every month. Second, when you want to be contacted regularly, as a consultant, freelancer, or job seeker, and need an Open Profile for that. Third, when you use InMails only occasionally, say for ten to fifteen hand-picked decision makers a month, and the rest of your outreach runs through connection requests.

Premium Business will not be enough if you want to slice audiences by company headcount, function, years in role, or a recent job change. LinkedIn lists no such filters for Premium Business. And according to LinkedIn Help, Premium InMail credits cannot be used to send InMails in Sales Navigator or LinkedIn Recruiter. Anyone using both runs two separate credit balances. Source: LinkedIn Help: InMail messages, retrieved 29 September 2026.

When Sales Navigator is mandatory

According to LinkedIn, Sales Navigator is a sales platform with its own lead and account search. The comparison page lists "50+ advanced search filters", 50 InMails a month, Account IQ and Lead IQ, the Relationship Explorer, Relationship Maps, and real-time alerts on job changes and new content for all three plans (Core, Advanced, Advanced Plus). TeamLink, Smart Links, and buyer intent signals are reserved for Advanced and Advanced Plus; CRM integrations with Salesforce, HubSpot, or Microsoft Dynamics are Advanced Plus only. Source: Sales Navigator: compare plans, retrieved 29 September 2026. The plans in detail, plus our take on whether they pay off, are in LinkedIn Sales Navigator: features, cost, and value.

Of the three options, four things come only with Sales Navigator:

  • Filter depth. According to the help article, lead filters cover company headcount, current and past company, function, current job title, seniority level, years in current company and position, geography by region or postal code, industry, profile language, groups, and school, plus signals such as changed jobs in the last 90 days and posted on LinkedIn in the last 30 days. Source: Sales Navigator Help: Search filters, retrieved 29 September 2026.
  • Lead lists and account lists. Saved leads go into lists you can use as a filter in any further search. How many lists or entries are possible, LinkedIn does not say in the articles we checked.
  • Saved searches with alerts. You can save a total of 50 lead searches and 50 account searches and receive weekly emails and homepage alerts when new people or companies match. Source: Sales Navigator Help: Saved searches, retrieved 29 September 2026.
  • 50 InMails a month. Credits renew on the first day of each month (UTC), accumulate up to 150, and must be used within 90 days. Unlike Premium, a second InMail to the same person before a reply is possible, but it uses another credit. Source: Sales Navigator Help: InMail credits, retrieved 29 September 2026.

That makes Sales Navigator mandatory for anyone who runs prospecting as an ongoing process: define an audience, maintain it in lists, get new matches delivered automatically, and use InMails where connection requests do not land. How InMails compare with regular messages and connection requests is explained in What is LinkedIn InMail? Meaning, credits, and InMail vs. message.

What is not an argument for Sales Navigator is a vague wish for "more reach". If you have no audience, 50 filters just give you 50 ways to slice it wrong. Concept first, subscription second.

What CompLeadly automates on each plan

CompLeadly works with all three account types but draws on different sources depending on the plan. The rule: CompLeadly does not replace a LinkedIn subscription. What your account cannot see, CompLeadly cannot reach. Sales Navigator and Recruiter features require the respective license.

With the free account

Your audience comes from the regular LinkedIn people search: category People, second and third degree, then narrow by location, industry, profile language, and job title. You save the link to that search in CompLeadly as an audience, or set the filters directly in the audience builder inside the tool. The step-by-step guide is in the knowledge base article Targeting audiences on LinkedIn without using Sales Navigator. Besides the people search, CompLeadly also accepts LinkedIn service searches, follower lists, your list of profile viewers, event attendees, and imported Excel lists with profile links; the full list is in Which searches can be used?.

On top of that run the core workflows: profile visit, follow, connection request, opener after acceptance, and follow-up after a set number of days without a reply. All of these are included in the Basic plan, as the feature overview shows. InMails drop out with the free account because LinkedIn does not offer them there.

With Premium Business

In addition to the core workflows, CompLeadly uses the Auto-InMail function: pick an audience, set a date range and daily limit, and store a subject and message. CompLeadly distinguishes between paid InMails that consume your credits and free InMails to Open Profiles. The recommendation is to set both up as two separate functions in your workflow so you always know whether credits are involved. Guide: Tutorial: Auto-InMail function. With 15 credits a month, the credit-based variant on Premium Business is more of a supplement for your most important decision makers; the Open Profile variant runs independently of it.

With Sales Navigator

Here CompLeadly pulls the audience straight from a Sales Navigator search, a saved search, or, via the lead-list filter link, your lead lists, with the same workflows as on LinkedIn.com and no export in between. Two knowledge base articles matter here. If a search shows more than 2,500 results, the surplus results are not displayed; the fix is to segment the search by region or further filters and work through the partial audiences one after another, as described in How you can use more than 2,500 results in Sales Navigator with CompLeadly. And because lead lists are tied to the license, it pays to back them up via profile export before you cancel or switch: Saving lead lists from Sales Navigator to CompLeadly. The 50 InMails a month are used by the Auto-InMail function exactly as on Premium, only with a bigger supply.

In sales, Sales Navigator is the source that lets you filter by company headcount, function, and job changes; CompLeadly takes care of connecting, openers, follow-ups, and InMails from there. In recruiting the same works with Recruiter Lite searches, the pipeline, and saved candidate pools as the source, provided you have the Recruiter plan; according to LinkedIn Help, Recruiter Lite comes with 30 InMails a month, and unlike Premium and Sales Navigator you can buy extra credits there in packs of 10. What that costs is in our guide to LinkedIn Recruiter cost. As a job seeker you usually need no subscription at all: you find recruiters and team leads through the people search, a connection request with a short note replaces the InMail, and CompLeadly handles the visit, the request, and the follow-up. If you want to message recruiters outside your network directly, the 5 InMails of Premium Career are what LinkedIn provides for exactly that. Source: LinkedIn Help: InMail credits, retrieved 29 September 2026.

All CompLeadly plans, including the 10-day free trial without a credit card, are on the pricing page. A shorter side-by-side of the LinkedIn account types is in our knowledge base.

Frequently asked questions about LinkedIn Premium Business and Sales Navigator

Can I combine Premium Business and Sales Navigator?

Technically they are two separate subscriptions with two separate InMail balances: according to LinkedIn Help, Premium InMail credits cannot be used to send InMails in Sales Navigator or LinkedIn Recruiter. Whether and how both plans can be booked in parallel is not described on the pages we checked. For Premium Duo, LinkedIn states that if the primary subscriber cancels, Premium ends for both accounts. Sources: LinkedIn Help a543895 and a7145258, retrieved 29 September 2026.

Can I switch from Premium Business to Sales Navigator?

LinkedIn does not state the cancellation terms for Premium Business on the pages we checked. For Sales Navigator, annual plans end at the end of the paid year and monthly plans at the end of the current month. On Premium, your InMail balance drops to zero when you cancel, and after cancelling you get the basic search limit back without a reset. Sources: Sales Navigator: compare plans, LinkedIn Help a543695 and a564226, retrieved 29 September 2026.

Is there a free trial?

LinkedIn offers a free trial for Sales Navigator Core and Advanced, provided you are not on any paid LinkedIn subscription and have not used a free trial in the past 365 days; LinkedIn sends a reminder seven days before it expires. The page does not state the duration. How the Premium trial works and what to check before starting it is in Try LinkedIn Premium for free: how it really works.

Is the free LinkedIn account enough for CompLeadly?

Yes. Audiences come from the regular people search or from imported lists, and profile visits, following, connection requests, openers, and follow-ups run without a LinkedIn subscription. Only InMails, Sales Navigator searches, lead lists, and Recruiter searches require the matching LinkedIn plan.

What is LinkedIn Premium All-in-One?

Premium All-in-One was formerly called Premium Business Suite. It comes with 30 InMail credits a month, accumulating up to 90, plus search by job function, seniority, location, headcount, and years of experience, daily prospect suggestions, and monthly hiring credits. That places it between Premium Business and Sales Navigator Core, without lead lists or saved searches with alerts.
